I have an '88 XF ute that I put a second hand 4.1 (carburettored) motor in 12 months ago. Compression tested at that time and was good. In the last few months it has developed an annoying problem where it can be started with no problems (hot or cold) and will happily idle at normal revs for 5 minutes or so. It then seems to drop revs and cough and eventually stall. It has no dramas starting again but won't idle. If it is manually revved it will prevent stalling and after a few minutes of revving will usually come good. If it is driven within 5 minutes of starting, it will stall at intersections etc. I know it need valve stem seals as it blows smoke after it has stopped at an itersection and smells a bit fumey sometimes. Funnily enough, the previous motor had similar symptoms and ended up dropping a ring. Oil consumption seems normal, slight usage of coolant with no obvious source.. Please help...

Howdy,
It's worth checking the 'Fuel cut-off Solenoid' which screws into the side of the Carburettor (In an XE/XF anyway) If your Model
has this (there's no such animal as a 1988 XF Falcon) get back to me and I'll explain how you can Test to see if it's

Just an update on my last message, an EFi specialist checked over my engine and it seems all the problem was that the air-flow meter was out of adjustment.
Thought I'd post this in case anyone was interested.

It may be a faulty Power Valve diaphragm - Father-In-Law tells me that this will cause the problem you have

Get a carby kit and replace all the gaskets and give the whole thing a good clean out...

I have a problem with idle on a 4.1 engine with 34adm carby, have put a new kit through it and made no difference. It will run only if I cover the secoundary barrel. I have also replaced the fuel solonoid and it sounds to be working.
