FROM CHRIS VIA EMAIL:

Hi, just recently i changed the front and real main seals in an xp 170cu in motor and during the process i had to remove the harmonic balancer, after taking it off i realised it was in two pieces seperated by a rubber/plastic damper and there were no alignment markings on it. as you can guess this could pose a problem puttin it back together. the inner ring has a keyway in it so it can only go on one way but the outer ring has the timing markings on it. the way i put it back on was the i knew the car was set to 10degrees BTDC so i put it on tested the timing, rotaed the outer ring, tested timing again and so on untill it was back to saying 10 degrees BTDC. But i was just wondering, how owuld i know if it was correct to begin with? i was wondering if there are supposed to be timing marks on it that maybe i can't see because of paint or something, or if you's have a way of aligning. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks and regards

chris

your best bet would be to get another one and line the key holes up to see where the marker is otherwise you will never know where it was.

I don't think it is supposed to be in 2 pieces.

Outer ring should be bonded to inner ring, chances are its going to come off while youre driving, best to get a change over from bursons or repco.
