I have heard of this in reference to diff gears etc.
What is it and why is it done??

in the case of diff gears they are driven with an abrasive paste between the teeth and they "wear" to each other...it cuts down noise and basklash will remain consistant as the gears wear...they do it because the machining process is not perfect..lapping
