Hi all,

Needed new gas tank fitted to my vehicle for a RWC as the old one was too rusted. It was a very old tank, the existing dash gauge was dead too so the installer fitted a new tank and a new LED gas gauge on the dash. Problem is the gauge reads full all of the time. I have questioned it and they said the wiring is a bit dicky' in the car so you'll need to see an auto sparky to get it rectified. I'm thinking it can't be that hard surely. In summary it has an earth wire and a feed wire to the sender at the tank and 3 wiring input ports at the gas gauge on the dash. Can anyone assist me in the correct sequence of wiring this so that it'll actually read the fuel level that's in the tank!

Many thanks

Peter

Hi
this is an easy one,the sender in the tank has 2 wires, one goes to earth and the other goes to the gauge, the gauge has 3 wires
one from sender, one earth and one 12 volts,
the sender and gauge must be matched 0-90 ohms,
to check tank wiring pull sender to gauge wire off sender, dash gauge should show full, hold sender wire to earth and gauge should drop to empty,if it dosnt drop gauge is faulty or wire is touching body.
hope this helps!!

if it aint broke we can improve it.

Cheers Steve

If it is reading full all the time, the wiring is earthing out between the tank and the gauge.

I had an adapter arrangement in the Overlander that switched the feed to the stock Holden fuel guage dependant upon which position the LPG-OFF-PETROL switch was in. Worked well.

A dead short to sender wire will cause low resistance to gauge thus reading empty 0ohm = no resistance, dead short
90 ohms = full, no continuity from gauge to sender , broken wire , high resistance
