Hey there I'm about to embark on a pickup project. Its an old chev - but does have the holden badges on the side!! (it was assembled and sold by holden). I've always been keen on a modern driveline for the old pickup so was considering using a recent model commodore as a donor vehicle, but I run straight gas on my HJ and have become a fan of gas research, so have started to lean towards straight gas as possibly a better option for the project, as I would like it to be a daily driver, and this would save me a bit of hassle in getting it all set up and running I guess.
So if I go straight gas, is there any benefit to using say a VN 5L, or would I be just as well off getting a cheaper older model with a 308? If I was going an older model, I probably wouldn't be adverse to a 253 either.
Decisions decisions....
Your thoughts and recommendations would be much appreciated!

Richo, Twin gas research on a old holden 355 stroker. Way to go. The 253 might be a bit small considering the weight of the truck. Cheers, Glenn

I'd use a Chev, just to be 'true' to the truck, like a 283. But don't ignore the Holden V6 or V8. You can buy complete cars with 4-speed auto boxes for less than $1500 as a wreck for a V8 or less than $1000 for a good V6. With something like a truck you c |

I'm basically starting with scratch with the pickup - I've basically got a rolling shell - its a blank canvas! Buying a wreck is an attractive option for that reason so I can hopefully use a stack of other parts as well, which as you said Byron, hopefully

That's why the EFI 304 and TH700 would be suitable. You may even be able to use the VN/VP diff which will be a 3.08:1 ratio. |

It's not too hard to get the ratio changed to something like 3.45 That's what I did with mine. |

What about a Crate 350? I think the main supplier is called Suburban Imports.

I have drooled over crate engines, but when I'm starting with a bare rolling shell - the cost and then having to track down all the other accessories scares me a bit...! Sounds like the 304 might be the easier option

in this vein, how much more difficult is it to set up the Efi for the 304 over the very simple carby version? exactly what needs to be done, I think there needs to be a fuel return line, the change of filler neck, swirl pot, and then some way of adapting |

Read what Brett has done on this site: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~brettsueferguson/index.htm He has made it even harder on himself by using a V6 (V8 is much easier into a model that has a Holden V8 as an option) and connecting up the column shift, Edited by user Thursday, 5 October 2006 8:25:04 AM(UTC)
