can the head gaskets be installed wrong on a 307 & would this cause overheating ?

If you've used 305 Chev heads then yes. You need 305 head gaskets for a 305 head on a 283 or 307. 4" bore gaskets don't seal the water jackets correctly. If the heads are proper 307 or any 4" bore head then that isn't your problem.

thanks byron, it was just a thought as i don`t know who did what to the car before i bought it. has 307/350 heads
