Howdy,
Can someone tell me if the clutch used for the small (hydraulic) 3spd in HR's & HK's is the same / will fit the later big (cable) 3spd's found in HG's & HQ's...? Ta. What's the story with the small 3spds - are they any good? I assume the later, bigger ones are better....?

Hi Beige Hornet.

The pressure plate & throwout bearing are the same, but the clutch plate has a different centre (splines are different). The early 'crash boxes' only have synchro on 2nd & 3rd & are quite weak compared to an all-synchro HK to WB 3-spee
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Is there some id marking or something obvious on the 3 speed boxes to identify the early units from the later HK-WB 3 speeders or do you have to check the input shaft?

They look completely different. The all synchro looks like an aussie 4spd
