I have just discovered that in the HJ GTS/4 my TH400 gearbox is actually a TH350. (Which is one reason I struggled to find the electrical kickdown connector - there wasn't one).

The rod shifter is adequate for park through drive, but won't select down as far as first, due to the slop in the linkages.

I have acquired the HQ cable shifter mechanism for the TH350/400. The mechanism under console seems quite bulky, and bolts in different places.

Has anyone swapped from rod to cable (either Holden cable or aftermarket)? Are there any tips / tricks / traps to watch for?

Personally I don't like that cable mechanism. I think they were out of a HZ, possibly Statesman only. Where is the sloppyness? Maybe you just need another T-bar mech?

The adjusting mount from the rod to the gearbox selctor slops about a bit. I have played with the number of washers to try and prevent wobble while still permitting shifting and not loosing shaft out hole because bolt not done up(a delicate balance).

I've always found them to be pretty tight. See if you can find replacement rod and trunnion (bit that rod slides through on gearbox end) off a trimatic car, and use them on yours. The rubber on the gearbox selector might be flogged out too.

Shape of pan is a big giveaway. The 350 is a rectangle with one corner cut offf. The 400 has corner cut off and a bit sticking out on the other side. (Google hydramatic gearbox identification, there are a couple of sites which show differences.

If you are after mechanical linkages, trademe has some up for sale at the moment. I am just waiting for new bracket to arrive to nail cable to gearbox and will try the switch over.
Now have first gear 2 out of three times. There is still around 1/2 inc

During engine out rebuild, I removed the rod mechanism and fitted old school B&M hammer cable shifter. much tighter and better. Looking at rod version that came out it is really straightforward. Only two connectors and, yes, both were flogged.
