I've got a new old stock Holden badge for the grille and a four original GTS badges with perfect chrome but no red paint on them. Would the original GTS badges have exactly the same red as the Holden badge? Is enamel the only paint that actually sticks to chrome or is there some other paint I should be using? I have a NOS grille badge and GTS badge and from memory they look identical. Haven't seen them for 10 years though as they are stashed away in boxes. |

I have some NOS tail-lights somewhere too with the candy-apple looking clear red on them, and a centre grille badge as well. I think I only have two GTS badges though, missing a 3rd. |

I answered my own question today with a nos GTS badge and nos 5Ltr badge as well as some nos wheel arch moulds, discovered all of the reds are the same. GTS badges, Holden grille badge, GTS wheel trim emblem, even the red for the wheel arch moulds are all exactly the same red. I've got a couple of very good HQ GTS badges here as well and even they look to be the same red. Didnt get a photo of the HK GTS badge but it was the same. Should be easy to match it in semi gloss.

Just a test run, close but no cigar. Needs to go slightly darker and I'll thin it out a bit next time. I'll let you know the details when its close enough.

Not 100% but thats close enough for me. I used Valspar acrylic because they have the most comprehensive colour chip folder I've ever seen, wasnt difficult to get it pretty close. Add just the slightest amount of thinners to allow it drip off the toothe pick and flow . . . yes a toothe pick is the best way to paint it. Make sure its a thick coating of paint, too thin and it will come off too easy. Brand - Valspar Series - 303C01 1K acrylic Colour map number - S0517 Sample size - 250ml Sample price - $20 Note: I added 10 grams of L47 flattener but that was a mistake, it dosent need it. www.valsparrefinish.com.au/distributors

A method I have used for dispersing the paint on badges and hubcap centres is a hypodermic needle.
Bit embarrassing asking for them at the chemist though but the results are well worth it.

Wouldn't you know it, the local supplier is out of that base. Will have some next week and I will give the 'pick' (hypo and tooth) a try.

Did my grille badge today using the tooth pick application technique; worked great and the colour is darn near spot on. Bugger, have to get it out of the oven without the wife noticing

Finished the badges for my car. Tried the different methods mentioned previously, but couldn't get a consistent finish doing them using those ways. Tried using an airbrush and this worked well. I used a combination of masking tape and vaseline for the masking, using the masking tape on any "easy to get at" areas on the GTS and the 5 litre badges and then painting vaseline on any other areas that don't need paint with a small art brush and tooth pick. After spraying them left them for a day and then removed the overspray with a plastic stick (with some small right angle cut outs on it) to scrape the paint/grease off. A cotton bud with some thinners on it tidied up areas missed with the tape or vaseline. Applied the black to the flags on the 5 litre badge with a toothpick. Also did the taillights this way as well, but used masking tape only on the boot moulding. Used Tamiya XF-7 for the GTS badges - Tamiya X-27 for the taillights boot moulding. https://drive.google.com...WlhYWtDaaFA0R3laZmhURXM

You'd have to thin out the model paint allot to get it to drip off a tooth pick properly.
Looks good.
Did you use X-27 enamel or X-27 acrylic on the rear trim?
For my rear trim I'm going to put four strips of masking tape over the areas where the red paint actually goes and then air brush liquid latex masking film over the whole thing, then quickly remove the masking tape before the liquid mask sets. This will leave latex on the areas I dont want painted red. Then air brush X-27 enamel over the whole lot. After the paint has dried the latex peels away easily.
A bit of d!cking around but it worked well in trial with an old trim I have here.

The X-27 was the acrylic. I found this paint tended to build up in the airbrush nozzle when spraying the larger areas on the boot piece, this didn't happen with the XF-7 - but only spraying small areas with that paint . Forgot to mention that the white and blue on the flags of the 5 litre badges is "Testors" brand spray can enamel (numbers 1245 - gloss white and 1211 - gloss blue. This is old paint, not sure if this brand is still around) The blue was a reasonable match for the blue on the glove box emblem which I used as I had nothing else to match it to. I sprayed these colours into the air brush cup (can't remember if I thinned them though)
The latex method sounds good, would like to have tried that as well. Found this part of the restoration took a lot of trial and error = lots of time, but good experience and saves sending parts away, which is always a concern

Anyone who deals with the Valspar system of paints could do it for you. I got it from Alltype Paints and they mixed a few different ones while I was there and eventually got it real close. Alltype Paints Address: 1750 Main N Rd, Salisbury Plain SA 5109 Phone: (08) 8281 6766 Email: [email protected]Weekdays: 8:30am - 5:00pm Saturday: 8:30am - 12:00pm All they need to do is follow these details and the badge red will be the same every time in acrylic. I'd like to get some mixed in enamel one day, the colour map number is S0517 and thats all they need to know to produce it in enamel I think.
