The early WB ute p van and 1 tonne were pressed steel but coloured to look plastic, so the last steel would of ended in 1980.

And the first plastic was the HB S2 Torana 1968

It is alloy. Cast alloy surround (same as Deville) and aluminium fins. It did have steel screws holding the fins to the surround!

HD to HG are also not steel they are alloy. They too had steel screws.

I don't know the answer to the question I asked. Yes it was an option on HR but was it tested on the HR or maybe even HD or EH ?

Not confined to 186S but I'm guessing a 186S was the first.

I would have guessed it was actually fitted to a HD initially for Engineering purposes, Dr Terry may have a better idea.

I think the first Opel 4sp box was an option and she only came in after the HR X2 came about.
That 4sp box was made in Asia in a chook shed.
I would say it was behind some Opel Vauxhall 6 cyl and fully tested over there, some difference may be so to our box behind the big 186.

The slats of an HD or HR grille are stainless steel while the centre bar is diecast alloy. AFAIK this style of grille construction, i.e. stainless steel slats with diecast alloy surround or centre was commonplace from FE to HR. HK onward contain more alloy.

AFAIK the only Toranas with plastic grilles are the LJ 6-cyl & the TA (1974 4-cyl). All others are aluminium.

All the HB-TA 4-cyl Torana manual gearboxes were pure Vauxhall.

The HB came first. From memory the M20 HR was released about 3-4 weeks after the HB.

The HB had a Vauxhall 4spd transmission so the HR is still the first Holden to have an OPEL 4 spd fitted?

The HA Viva was the first passenger vehicle that GMH sold in Australia with a 4spd manual transmission as standard but as we all know it isn't a Holden.

Exactly what I thought except all Torana from LJ onwards have plastic Grilles.
So that means the HT would be the first Holden with a plastic radiator grille?

That is correct, I was only commenting on the timing of HR vs HB, not the Opel box thing.
