Does anyone here have access to a VL V8?

Just wondering how far the drier sits out from the A/C condenser. When you buy a replacement one of these it comes with the drier.

I'm looking at fitting one to my HK but the total depth including the drier might rule it out. It is the right configuration for me with the high pressure inlet from the compressor on the driver's side and the exit from the drier on the passenger side. The bottom has pins that just sit in bungs which is easy to do and the sides have brackets.

Here is one:

https://www.baxters.com....re-vl-v8-condenser.html

Dimensions are 580 x 360 x 25mm without the drier.

If it doesn't fit depth wise I'll look for an alternative, the idea here being one less bracket to make if the drier is attached to the condenser. I'm trying to ensure all non-standard stuff attaches using factory holes or bolt on stuff only is modified.

I've got my old one in the scrap metal pile in the backyard. I'll measure it for you one evening this week.

I had to have pipes made to suit - the VL V8 corrodes the lowest joint between the long pipe (that goes to the TX valve) and the short C-shaped pipe unique to the V8.
I ended up getting 5 sets made, as it wasn't much more than a one-off set, and we shared them among fellow VL Brock owners.

In your case, it may be just as easy to have a flex line run all the way down.
Cheers,

Mick

Thanks Mick

I'll have to get the grille out of the HK and see how much space I have.

BTW does anyone know hoe the A/C condenser on a HK-HG attaches? Does it just go on the radiator bolts?

No picture of A/C condenser in my HK parts book. HG has a picture with the hole spacing of the condenser looking like radiator bolt spacing . Thanks Mark.

Thanks mate, I didn't think to look in the HG book, saw it wasn't in HK.

I looked in the HG book and yes it does appear to mount off the threads of the radiator. Anyone have any ideas how this works? The top radiator bolts on my HK use standard clip-nuts used everywhere on the body, the bottom two are nuts welded to the radiator support. I guess I could use some threaded rod and weld a nut to it for the top holes, then put it into the support with nuts and lock washers on the front so both the radiator and the condenser are effectively stud mounted. Bottome one would just screw into teh captive nuts.

The HG parts book shows the A/C lines running through a round hole in the firewall, anyone know where this is on the firewall?

I'm looking to mount the SD508 on the driver's side now with a serpentine drive. Will have to try somehow get a line through to attach to the driver's side of a condenser, then out of the condesner into the drier on the passenger side, sneak through the hole in the radiator support on the outside lower of the rail, run along under the LH wheelarch/rail and come through the big round hole at the back onto a bulkhead fitting in the heater box blank. The heater hoses will go through the same fitting. Will come out of the other side of the Vintage Air Evaporator+valve under the dash, run across and go through the 6cyl speedo cable hole or through the clutch rod hole in the column base (will try and fit a solid fitting here), with a hose up to the back of the compressor.

I guess the other option would be to use both the 6cyl speedo cable hole and the hole in the steering column base for the refrigerant lines, and then run both the drier to evaporator line and the compresser to condenser line through the driver's side 'big rounnd hole' running both up under the RH wheelarch, just not sure how easy it will be to sneak two lines through the hole in the radiator support next to the rail. This would mean using a condenser with both outlets on the driver's side, which is what an original HK-HG one has, not sure if you can buy new ones oif these anymore though.

There is a dimple virtually dead centre of the HK/T/G firewall, just near the chassis number stamping. Use that as the centre pop mark for a pilot drill. The original hole was around 40-45mm.

There is a good choice of aftermarket condensers with both fittings on the same side, just check what size (width & height) you need. Modern parallel flow style condensers will perform much better with R134a gas than the old factory tube & fin style.

From the back edge of the core, to the front edge of the drier bracket, is approx 110mm (had to eyeball the tape measure).

The breakdown is:
Core: 25mm
Air gap: 20mm
Drier: 63mm
The rest is the bracket holding the drier.

One thing to be careful of is the trinary switch that fits into the top of the drier on a VL. You might want to locate it elsewhere, as the plug & wiring sticks out further forward again (not by much, but if space is tight, you don't want the wires to rub).
Cheers,

Mick
