If you want my personal opinion.

I'd paint it and trim it to look totally original.
Pull the entire drive train out and put it on a pallet, store it.
Fit front disc brakes including booster (if not already), upgrade to HQ-WB front rotors and calipers.
Redo all the suspension bushes, balljoints and steering. Don't lower it much, maybe 20mm. Buy some good quality oil shocks for it.
Get a stronger diff made up fitted with HQ-WB rear drums, either a 9" or a Borg Warner.
Find an injected VN-VS 5.0L, get a HT-HG sump, pickup and dipstick for it.
A TH350 or a Trimatic converted to TH pattern will fit without floor mods.
If the 5.0L you buy needs a rebuild your best bet is to find a manual pattern HT to WB/VK block and use that block for the rebuild then you can use a straight Trmiatic. This way you can keep the column shift to be even more original.
Or do something funky like convert the 3spd manual to a V8 3spd (input shaft and cover change) and use it behind the 5.0L.
Or do something less drastic and more sympathetic (and cheaper) and put a 253 in it and keep the original type gearbox and diff (just changed to V8 flavour, like a V8 banjo centre and tailshaft).

If you have more funds do what I did and buy a Rodtech front crossmember and brakes, complete with power steering rack. Allows you to run far cheaper engine bits (like not have to pay $800 for a HT-HG sump/pickup). Plus buy a vintage A/C kit and fit it up under the dash. Then run whatever engine you want keeping the donor vehicle's air and steer pumps.

Fair bit of work in the above but personally I reckon it increases the value of an original 161 car that easily covers any extra expenditure if you decide to sell it. If its going to be a cruiser or a car you take over any distances make sure you stick with a rear axle ratio around 3-3.25:1 with a box without overdrive, depending upon what height tyres you end up with. Best bet is to run 15" rims with tyres within 25mm diameter of the originals.

Thanks for all that info I was thinking the same thing I'm keeping the original look column shift bench seat standard wheels it's going to just be a nice cruiser anything 253 upwards I'm looking at not looking at chopping up the gearbox hump to get a bigger box in or anything I'm yet to find a picture of the exact trim 1282-14G it's a early 69 build from what I no it must be a carry over trim from the HK if so would this make it a more rare combo

1282 is the exterior paint. 14G will be a standard HT trim, blue vinyl with a cloth insert. Won’t be early ‘69 as that was HK, unless it’s a pilot HT.

I’d just run a Holden V8 with a Trimatic or a 3spd manual. What box is in it now? So 253, 308 or 304. If you keep it carbied everything will be around for original fitment, just a few things get expensive like sump/pickup and the bit in the clutch mech you need to convert a clutch setup to suit V8. If you aren’t worried about originality you can use later rocker covers, timing case, HQ-HZ style radiator, aftermarket intake, generic carby, aftermarket air cleaner etc. If it’s a Powerglide I wouldn’t bother trying to convert it to a V8 Powerglide as that is not as easy as it sounds, best bet is finding a HQ-WB right hand shift V8 Trimatic. It will use the same gearbox crossmember as 6cyl Powerglide. Just needs a HG column and Trimatic linkage and HK-HG all synchro speedo cable (or HG Trimatic). If you want to have the auto lockdown you just need a switch somewhere on the throttle linkage and some wiring to the transmission and harness.

I wouldn’t run a banjo though, you’ll need to find a V8 one and they are stupidly overpriced. Invest in a Borg Warner or something stronger than a banjo.

Why do you think HT would have HK carry over trim? 14G should just be standard HT Kingswood Twilight blue with a cloth insert. 14E is the standard all vinyl Twilight Blue on a HT Kingswood. For it to be HK trim it would be Light Teal or Jacana blue or Bayou blue or maybe another as there were a few different trim changes through the HK series.

From what I could find and what I've been told it's bayou blue with cloth insert hence the reason I think they used up what ever they had left over on the early HT build would that be correct

Bayou is early HK I think, can’t remember. There was lots of different trims used across HK. GMH would normally bring out new trim for a new series, and if they were using up unused trim it would normally end up slotted in during a series to get rid of it which they did do on HT and HG Belmont the if I recall correctly.
