I have a 440 V8 Hemi engine out of a boat. It’s a dry sump engine obviously marinised to suit a ski boat. Apparently it’s had work done to it. What do I need to do to get it to run in my shed? Do I need to buy a normal sump and convert it back to wet sump? I just want to see if it goes really.

Does it have a balancer driven oil pump?
Note it’s not a Hemi, it’s a Wedge. In that timeframe the only Hemi in the USA was a 426. The 440 is an RB Wedge. Still an awesome thing but not in the 426’s league. Would go nice in an old Valiant. |

Good to know on the Hemi. I’ll check it out tomorrow. I have Dads old pilot house Fargo Ute in the shed. Maybe one day the 440 might end up in it.

I’d be looking for a wide engine bay vehicle like a 1970’s Valiant or even a HQ-HJ. Would need significantly more Engineering though in a HQ for engine and transmission mounts for a 440 and 727 than a 454 and TH400, and probably going backwards in power and torque anyway. I think the highest factory power out of a 440 was 385hp from the Six Pack (3x2BBL carbs). They weren’t built as factory hipo race engines anyway, didn’t need to be as that was what the Hemi (the 426 Hemi, there was also a 426 Wedge). There was a competition version of the Wedge, called a Max Wedge which was a 426 Wedge that was rated as high as 425hp. These were crazy engines with big cross-ram intakes and dual 4BBL Carters. These were replaced by the mighty Hemi 426 in 1964 though. Have a look at the width of one in the second picture down in the link below. Seems like a good choice for the Fargo really. No doubt the beam axle and drum brakes might not be such a good match. However my 2020 Ram is hopelessly overpowered with its 5.7 motor (try giving it a boot full on the dirt with traction control off and watch it understeer straight through the first corner you come to, or give it too much in the wet at 100 on the highway going around a rough corner) so what could go wrong in a 50’s version of the same car? I doubt the 440 puts out as much power as the current Ram motor does it? Interesting fact, we put the Ram next to our 2019 WRX STI, the ram was faster off the mark to 100.

The DS Express with the rear axle we get here is almost exactly the same 1/4 mile time as an XY GT-HO and a HT-HG GTS350 ie 14.8. I wouldn’t call it overpowered though, mine could do with another 75kW at least, especially now it has a heavy as hell Snugtop canopy on it. I just wish we’d got the 6.4L version. What mine does need badly is an Eaton truetrac. I used to complain about the LSD in my Hilux that whenever I tried to accelerate in the Hilux that it kept going sideways but this is worse, it just spins one wheel and axle tramps. The oil pump appears to be mounted the same as a Holden V8 pump.

It has a tag on the heat exchanger/exhaust manifold that says ; Marine engine by Chrysler Model 383BWL10
Is it possible that it could turn backwards for twin boat engine set up? It was out of a single engine ski boat.
Can I just bolt a normal sump and pick up on and fire it up?

Hate to break the bad news, you already know it is not a Hemi, but it's not a 440 either! Still a big block, but a 383 cube.
Can you check what way hhe starter turns it?

Yes it could spin backwards. Will have a different cam and distributor, and possibly a different rear main seal.

Same engine family as 440. Like a 366, 396 and 402 are the same engine family as 427, 454, 496, 502. A 396 goes hard, just not as torque as a 454. Like a 350 vs a 302. 440 vs 383 will be similar.
