Started working on my HK GTS again. I thought I'd get more time over the last few years with Covid but I was actually busier.
Looking at condenser options.
Side note: I'm using a Vintage Air Compac unit behind the glove box, with the hot refrigerant exiting the evaporator and heading across the firewall internally and doing a 90deg bend out of either the factory hole in the base of the steering column or out the 6cyl speedo cable hole to the compressor located on the driver side of the engine (engine has a serpentine drive setup for air, steer and alternator). The refrigerant will exit the compressor and through the radiator support on the driver side of the radiator.
So I need a condenser with the hot side entry on the driver side and cold exit on the passenger side where it'll enter the drier and run back to the unit in the cabin down the passenger side rail viz a 3-way fitting in a heater blank off plate (2 x hot water and 1 x cold refrigerant).
Doing some measuring and it looks like a VN V8 condenser will go close. How do these mount on the bottom? Do they just drop into holes or rubbers? I was looking at VL V8 but they are way too expensive now. |

Yes, the VP V8 condenser is a good unit, but don't use a 2nd hand or NOS VN V8 condenser. The original VN V8 unit was a serpentine condenser designed for R12. The replacement VP type is a parallel flow R1234a style. You'll note also it has brackets allowing the mounting of an extra condenser fan which you might need depending on available air flow & pressures.
The lower mounting slots into rubber bushes & into holes in the radiato support panel.

Thanks Terry. I can replicate the bushes and holes in the HK radiator support and then just fabricate brackets for the top. They aren't all that expensive for quality aftermarket units. I'm going to get to work on it soon by removing the grille and radiator and start measuring and getting it and a drier to fit, if one will fit between the grille and the support. Planning on making up some brackets and using simple Stauff clamps to support the lines, but will probably just use a made up hose between the compressor and the -8 fitting on the hot side of the condenser. The compressor fitting are up on the top facing the driver side inner guard, you can see them in the images here.
