I've never replaced them because it seems it is much easier to do if you have a press. But I am wondering if it can be done just by drifting the retaining ring into place? Also how is the race in the housing extracted? According to the parts manual, tonner and sedan bearings are different, bigger because of the thicker axles I guess? The One-Tonner rear wheel bearing & seal kit is no different to the regular sedan/wagon/ute/van kit apart from the retaining ring. The One-Tonner one is thicker.
Don't try this job without a press, you'll only damage the axle or the bearing.

TIA you need access to a shop press to do it... as Dr Terry correctly says ( I have done this job on a number of Holdens and Commodores and the press in the garage corner gets a workout!) the race in the housing? normally will fall out, it is a hand fit into the axle tube end gasket? I don't recall one... but remember the axle has a seal (similar to an engine balancer seal) that goes on the axle when you install a new kit. Just make sure one you buy comes in the kit with the bearing and retainer |

From the factory most Holdens have a gasket between the backing plate & the end of the axle housing. There isn't any oil on either side of this gasket, it doesn't really do anything & I've never seen anybody replace it.
As Smitty2 has said, the outer race will virtually fall out, it might need some help with a flat-blade screwdriver.

Thanks to both of you. Got it.The gasket is irrelevant but there is a seal in there which a quick web search shows does come with a kit. Race doesn't need a slide hammer. Is the bearing a tight fit as well or just the ring? Three weeks before any mechanic I trust can do it for me so I think I'll take the axle out and cut the ring (and bearing if tight) off myself and get a shop to press the new bearing on. Anyone used Pedders recently? Are they still a suspension mob or just a corporate servicing joint? They have a shit reputation with me since they tore up a ball joint pressing it in for me 20 years ago. I wouldn't have minded much but they didn't bother to tell me! But I might trust them to press a bearing on now.
