Afternoon gents,

Is there an "easy" way to decode a typical sbc engine number, im trying to find out what capacity/year etc of a particular number so is there an online source thats credible?

vicroads couldnt tell me anything about it lol.

There is a multitude of different numbers. As Jim hints, you are better off searching for specific info rather than general.

cool, i have no idea where/what the block came from, i dont have the block to narrow it down by date code.

the number is straight off a rego label of a car that never came factory with a chev and id like to possibly put one back in without hassles from the Man.

Im not deliberately being vague, i just need to "prove" that the engine number is a sbc and show capacity if available.

suprisingly, the vicroads database didnt/couldnt tell me this.

ill send the number to you Jim, and see what you can dig up because i have no idea where to start, lol.

1974-5 ....350 chev made on the 21st of march @165 hp from the factory(not correct output=just to please the government)Flint factory.

there's a US site called mortech/mortec something like that. there is every casting number GM ever cast. casting number should be on the RHR of the blockas you look at it from the front.

i bought a 1 tonner for parts, was told it has a 327, did the mortech.com and discovered a 283 from a 1958 chev apache pick up truck! it's still sitting under the bench...
