Hi guys, sons standard HZ 202 (trimatic colum shift) is stuffed. looking at changing to a standard 308. Will the 308 fit to the existng 6cylinder trimatic? Do i have to move the box back? Cheers

No. You need a V8 trimatic but it will fit exactly where the 6cyl trimatic does. If you wish to keep the column shift just make sure it is a RH shift trimatic. Also make sure you get a trimatic pattern 308, all auto HJ to late 1981 308's excluding LH-LX Torana are Chev pattern engines. Will also need:
Radiator. Exhaust. Engine harness. Speedo cable driven gear to suit V8 trimatic (normally). Probably V8 front springs unless it has aftermarket examples already.
The 6cyl tailshaft will fit a V8 trimatic, but in factory V8 applications the tailshaft had bigger uni joints, and a salisbury diff. I would recommend doing this, maybe at a later stage if the banjo breaks.

When i did my 6->8 conversion my local radiator shop just changed the conections on the tanks for about 40bucks. AFAIK the trimatic and aussie 4speed driven gears are the same and the gear selected is determined by the diff ratio and wheel size so should be a matter of swaping to the new trans. Not sure if mine had HD springs but it went ok even with a steel 5 poster.

Nah, V8's and VK EFI boxes normally have a different drive gear, hence you normally have to change the driven gear so the speedo works right.

Just buy a complete car and swap the good gear over. Plenty around at the moment. I've bought complete running registered Premier wagons for $1500 recently. The body parts alone would get that money back and you get all the little tricky bits that you didn't originally think of.
