Yes, the 5 year inspection thing is very strange, there are a lot of unroadworthy 3 year old cars out there. I'm not being petty & just talking about a brake light out, I mean things like canvas or steel belts showing thru bald tyres & serious suspension or exhaust issues, we get them thru the workshop regularly.

I was listening to talkback radio on Friday, re the rego label thing. A guy from WA rang in & mentioned that they lost them several years ago & mentioned all of the points that we have above. He said that some enterprising mob have introduced their own rego labels, for 'reminder' use. You can purchase them at your local newsagent & put on your own car to remind you when it's due. They have no legal standing (obviously) but sound like a good idea, especially for company cars.

We haven't had rego checks in the ACT for years. It is 'random'. I have 4 cars with rego, 2 of those on club rego and have never been called up. Parking inspectors supposedly have the power to put defect notices on cars. They also have roadside inspections. I can't remember the last time I saw one and I do a lot of k's. I shudder when I think of the state of our cars. The amount of cars with crook head and tail/brake lights for a start.

We follow whatever NSW does so I suppose we'll lose our stickers eventually too.

One win for the low lives!

Now you can drive around and not be easily spotted as unregistered and as usual uninsured (CTP) How many low lives will feel a sense of relief as they cannot be easily spotted and take the risk.

I believe 90% if not all NSW police vehicles that have cameras fitted also have rego checking technology, so the sticker isn't a issue there, but if you forget to pay it, look out.

Now some NSW police have reservations on having no rego labels,

http://smh.drive.com.au/...kers-20120528-1ze8b.html

What happens, say post Jan 2013, when you have no rego label on your historic vehicle, but you have an original-like sticker on your windscreen from this company, http://grafixunlimited.com.au/?

I have decided it is 100% a stupid idea and a backwards step. It does not save money as we would have been paying for the labels anyway. If they want to save money perhaps they could have left the leaflets out that came with the label trying to sell us personalised plates.
I pay my rego and I want the label. There are bigger issues than this load of crap that the RTA need to deal with.

Hello we all work under AS/NZ 3000 Wiring rules.
Yet we hear the Mining industry has rules to it's own, taking on Indian and other ethnic workers straight off the boat and no real checking if their wiring standard is acceptable.
Man this country is going down in a big way.

It goes to prove yet again that Australia is not & never has been one country. It has always been 6 separate colonies, all with there own little separate inefficient governments & one big, even less efficient government overseeing those.

If you go to the UK (& I'm not saying that they're much better) you will see what are effectively 3 or 4 separate countries (England, Scotland, Wales & maybe Nth Ireland) all sharing the same laws, police force, roads authority, education system & health system, leaving Westminster to handle their federal issues. Here we have different laws for each state, each with their own separate police force, RTA, education system & education system & the whole lot duplicated at federal level. We are the most over-governed country in the world, even sillier when you think that the population is only 23 million.

This whole sticker thing is only another revenue raising scam.

Dr Terry

It's funny you have brought this up, I watched a documentary a few years back that was put together by a few political & economic uni professors and they reckon we need to get rid of the state governments and only have federal and local governments. By doing this we will save billions of dollars and that's just by getting rid of a heap of useless politicians, not to mention the billions we would save by cutting out duplication and red tape...

The SA Govt solution for this, an iphone app, just type in the rego and comes back with this

All good if you have an iphone and phone coverage, no good if you don't

Is this all too hard for people? Pay it! Easy!

Company car has a log book? Rego payment confirmed in front page? If not don't drive it.

The label means nothing.

Frik me. People can pay for their smokes or booze easy without forgetting, what is so friking hard about a rego.

In my case it's a fully maintained car, that I have full personal use of, and isn't shared with other employees or as part of a pool.

So it's like a personal car - it doesn't have a 'log book' as such - only a warranty & service booklet, as all servicing, repair, rego & insurance charges are paid by the fleet company. They simply send us a label when the rego has been paid, it gets dropped on my desk, and I stick it on the screen.

Twice in 4 years I've looked at the windscreen label & thought "gee, it's only a few days before the rego runs out, better check with the fleet manager" - only to find the fleet company forgot to pay it because the drop kick school leaver they employed has been off for the last 3 weeks (probably because her Iphone facebook app failed), and it was still sitting on her desk. Luckily I haven't driven it unreg'd, as it has been sorted quick smart when escalated, but it has been a week overdue getting it's (now unimportant) label.

And my cases are not one-offs - it has happened to numerous colleagues of mine, across both the fleet companies that provide our cars. One of our rural NSW employees recently got hit with unreg'd & uninsured because he simply assumed "fully maintained" meant just that - without considering the human aspect at the fleet company. The law took no remorse - the fines stuck, even though it was not his fault.

What happens if someone at work needs a car in a hurry & I offer them mine? Are they going to check the rego online? (Hell, if they can remember the plate to do that, good luck to them). Because of that incident above, we've all been instructed not to trust that the car is rego'd, and check our labels.
Cheers,

Mick

I agree with Mick, it is all to easy to full between the cracks in the system. Unless you live in NSW & pay our ridiculous rego costs & the accompanying fines you wouldn't appreciate the problem.

I don't know if you have a similar situation in other states, but another problem exists in small/medium company fleets where all the cars have to be registered under one name, usually the owner or MD (they call him the company nominee). If one car then gets a parking or revenue camera fine & that ticket goes astray & then unpaid, the SDRO (State Debt Recovery Office) freezes any dealings with that person. So what happens then he doesn't get his licence or any regos renewed (without him knowing) until that debt is cleared. There is very little if any communication from this mob, they are a law to themselves. By this time of course, a $20 parking fine becomes $500 with court costs. You can imagine the field day they are going to have with the average $1000+ 'out of rego' fines.

What was the problem with rego labels again.

well the next step from that already ,
in dongguan city china the red light and speed cameras on the freeway go straight to your online account with govt vehicle licencing
each person with a driving licence has a account user number and individual log in to motor vehicles web site

they send out nothing at all to you for anything related to your licence and your vehicle/ vehicles ,speeding/parking/drivers licence / toll gate charges

you are required to log in and check your online account at the end of each month and you have an additional month to pay any camera fines / parking fines ect listed , it must save millions and millions of dollars in paper / postage , man hours labour , mail costs ,

The sooner Qld drops rego labels the better. It can't come soon enough for me. Then if you choose you can put a period correct first rego label on and the cars will look great just as they were when new.

You don't need a rego label to tell you a car is registered. Anyone who doesn't carry the current rego papers (or a copy) in the car is asking for trouble in my book. In some states it is the law to carry them in the vehicle.

Read my post about company cars. We don't even see the rego papers - the lease company keeps them, and only sends us the top 1/3 of it, with the rego label on there (if they remember to renew it).

Cheers,

Mick

Whats the difference in practicality in carrying Rego papers in your glovebox or sticking a Rego label to your windscreen?????
It saves the RTA 10 cents, but we are now being told by people that we are better off because we can now get online to check our Rego. Ah correct me if I am wrong, but we pay to do that don't we? So if we follow that logic, we are smarter and better off now because WE pay to check our Rego? The sticker is fool proof, it is proven to work, it is always clearly visible for all to see, it is simple and it works.
I don't care if someone wants to put a period correct label on their old car. This has a real world negative effect on the every day motorist. I have 6 vehicles Registered, falling due at 6 different times of the year. My wife and I run two businesses and I also work a full time job which takes me away from home for half the year. The label comes in the mail, I organise Rego. I pay the RTA good money to do this for me, now they expect me to do their work for them as well and pay to do it? There is a good chance that while I am occupied doing other stuff that I will neglect to check the RTA website. Its their job, not mine.
