Whats going on with my VY engine cooling ?

Can some one help me with my V6 VY random engine cooling behaviour. It's driven daily by my wife who's pretty gentle with our commodore, but a couple of weeks back it lost all water and naturally got very hot as a result. My 1st thoughts were well there's obviously a leak in the system somewhere, radiator or a hose or gasket or something like that. Well we let it cool off and filled it up with water to check where, but no obvious leaks so for a day or two we kept the water up to it making sure it did'nt run out of water and after a day or two driving and losing water, the problem disappeared, so all good we continued the daily driving for a week untill today all started losing water again. Why the stop start getting hot and losing water. Would it be the thermostat playing up ?....Jack

As with any motor, there are many places for water to leak from or disappear into. Have the cooling system pressure tested, if possible, while both cold & hot. Also, have the cooling system tested for exhaust gasses. Thermostat might be playing up, but wont account for water loss. |

Try not to use tap water, it's ok for older cast iron blocks and heads but Alloy doesn't like it at all. James |

Yes, even though the block & heads are cast iron, Commodores have a lot of alloy bits including radiator core, water pump, timing cover, inlet manifold etc. etc. Coolant/inhibitor quality & mix is very important. Most likely causes of coolant loss in VS-VY V6s is a leaky water pump or heater valve. Dr Terry |
