Hi i was wondering if there was a way to tell the differences between these gearboxes from looking at them not pulling them apart

I assume you are talking about 3-sp boxes, if so, they are considerably different in both appearance & size.
Maybe someone on the forum could post some pics.

Yep sorry, 3 speed from crash to synchro as I would like to know if I can just remove my non synchro box from my ej with column shift and a red motor and keep the shift pattern the same with a sychro box, thanks

Unfortunately no, the EJ's column linkage will not work will the 3-sp all-synchro box.
You will need a floor shift conversion to make it work. Also because the all-synchro is a much larger gearbox, you will need some serious floor surgery, tailshafts mods & a conversion cross-member to make it all work. If you're doing all of that, you might as well fit an Aussie 4-sp or Toyota 5-sp.

Can be done, but a tricky job. Bell housing, box size & rear mount are different. Tailshaft & clutch are also different. There is a guy on ebay that sells a kit that can do the column shifter though. Non Synchro. Later model all synchro. Edited by user Monday, 26 August 2013 11:00:35 PM(UTC)

So what would I get the above synchro box from? Also how much floor work is needed? I dont mind chasing the parts if I can get a shifter linkage conversion but I dont want to hack into the floor, thanks utility8 for the pics mate and thanks also Dr Terry

To get the box to the correct height, unfortunately, you'll need to manipulate the floor. If you've got a factory auto body shell, the floor work is still required, but significantly less....but floor work is still floor work. |

It would be easier to fit a Toyota 4 speed with floor shifter than an all synchro 3 speed. |
