I've just looked at a mates bike engine after the timing chain let go, lots of bent valves and smashed pistons. Why does this not happen to the old red six? They just stop! Is there enough clearance at TDC to allow an open valve?

Regards

You got it.

Non interference engine. The motor just stops producing power, but still turns. Replace the stripped gear and it will run again.

Yep, mine went doing 110 kph last year. I still use the same 186 as a daily. It hasn't seemed to of affected anything else.

I stripped a gear at 100k's, it was just like I turned the key off

I towed the car home and replaced the gear that afternoon, I didn't even take the cam out!

At the time (about 13 years ago) the new aluminum gear and timing case gasket was $40
