how do hydraulic lifters work ?

Standard (solid) lifters are a cylinder with a dished cup in one end (that the pushrod sits in) with an oil hole in it, that connects to a hole in the side. Under normal operation, the oil comes in the side and out the top, through the hollow) pushrods a

thanks for the info jabba so do you need fill them with oil first before putting them in ?cheers

No. They fill very quickly once the engine begins running. But it is a good idea to put either oil or assembly lube in the cup and on the following surface when puttingi them in.

If you are particularly worried about it, you can disable the spark and

Standard are easier to build and maintain, but you have to manually set the valve train lash. Hydraulic means no valve lash setting (well, some, but very forgiving), but need appropriate oil to work properly.
