Is there another method for separating the lower ball joint from the spindle without the proper tool or a ball joint fork?

Have tried hitting the threaded shaft while putting pressure between the control arm and the spindle.

I want to change the strut insert and spring.

Have been quoted $100 in labour to change both sides should I just get someone else to do it?

James

You only have to be in front at the end of the race.

Do not hit the thread,,
You need to hit the strut where the ball joint shaft seats,,
You must get a good swing at it and hit with enough force to shock loose the taper on the shaft of the joint,,(do not use a small hammer)
If you hit the thread you wil

Nothings open here at 8pm and the cars partly disassembled, Ill have to get the bus to town. BTW I was using a copper hammer to avoid damaging the thread. Forgot about hitting it on the side, its been a while since Ive down any suspension stuff. Thanks.

Hi Guys.

John (Mr wipe) has got it one. I've removed 1000s of ball joints & tie rod ends etc & have never used a fork tool. I always smack the tapered hole on the side. In other words when removing tie rod ends, hit the end of the steering arm, when do
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Hitting the strut base worked and the ball joint popped out, both sides!

Thanks for the tips, just putting it back together now.
