Hi all, I'm new to the forum so expect some weird questions.
I have owned a '76 Ford Transit for around 16 years and have now just started to look after her a bit better. Recently changing diff and placing disc brake front end under her. I'm now contemplating a 289-302 Windsor engine to put in it. It now runs a 200 6 cyl, (standard) 3 sp box. I need to know if it all will fit under the little bonnett!!!
Set up maybe v8 with C4 box???
Any suggestions or help would be grateful.
Thanks

BasketcaseBear on the Holden Forums has a 308 powered late model Transit. He would be able to talk clearances of a V8 better than anyone. I have sent him an email on the subject.

A couple of questions so that I may be able to help you a little more.

1.Is your gearbox a 3 speed manual, BW35 or C4 auto?

2. is your 200 sump a front drop one as in Falcon or a rear drop one as in a Cortina?

3. would you like me to go an

Just a few answers to yours!
1: it's a three speed BW at the moment.
2: Sump is a front drop one!
3: Rails and susp, should be fine looks very strong.
4: Width was the problem at rear I was worrying about, most likely have to remove radi

Ok than you are in luck the front drop sump means that a V8 Falcon sump should do the job.

The C4 is the same length as the 3 speed and has the same tailshaft yoke. This means if you drop the 302 and c4 in and bolt the gearbox mount up then you

My brother had an older transit van with a 250 cross flow in it. There was a whole lot of room under there. I would think that if a straight six would go in, a v8, being shorter would go in no troubles. Like it was said by someone else, you may have to

I'm going to throw another question at you all. Say I kept the straight six in her and touch it up a bit and decided to rip out the three speed and replace with a 4 speed box, what box will actually fit straight on without major problems? Remember the old

hey unclearthur,
I am not sure,,but it seems to me, that you having a ford motor already in it, it would be far easier to put say a 4ltr 4.1 litre? in her, and they have heaps of get up and go?

I'm not at my computer much this week but re a 4 speed.

6cyl TC Cortinas had a toploader with it's external linkages. You would be very hard pressed to find one and if you did it would not be cheap. A V8 toploader can be fitted to a 6 cyl single ra

Jim5.0,
Thanks for the info, the three speed has the linkages on the side of box, coupled to the shift which to me is at the front just behind the bellhousing.
This places the shift as I'm driving on a mound (raised area) poking through to my left forw

I have just gone out and measured my single rail. The gearstick pokes out roughly 54CM back from where the gearbox meets the bell housing. Would moving the gear stick back ~half a metre put it between the seats or nearly into the cargo area?
