Ordering all my suspension bits shortly, and I'm just after some advice for how low I should go on my HQ V8 Premier sedan.
I intend on using the car fairly regularly so I don't want it in the weeds, just a nice stance that isn't going to bottom out on every kerb and speed hump. Won't be using any bigger than 15" wheels.
If you can, post a photo with how much you've lowered it.

legally in SA its 32mm to the bump stop, Hj -HZ was 36mm.

Hehe, I think in WA, its just 100mm to the lowest part of the car. In any which case, I'm going for 2" lower so hopefully cops will only be pulling me over for high 5's.....

From memorie after 27 yellow stickers on mine I think it was 600 mm to the centre of the headlight in W.A., but it was a while ago.

I went to Pedders and asked for a set of springs for my HQ and I told him I wanted it to sit illegaly low. I bought a set of Pedder SportsRyder 2062 and a set of 2060 and I think they are the standard ones for the racing HQ's ?? Not sure. Never had a problem bottoming out because I've always had heavy SportsRyder shocks under it. Soft shocks might bottom out more often though. The rear springs can slip out if you jack the car up. This is what it looks like with 15" Pontiac rims.

Never had a problem bottoming out because I've always had heavy SportsRyder shocks under it. Soft shocks might bottom out more often though
Shocks can only control rebound and compression speed of the wheel. They are filled with oil which is forced through various sized holes which restricts the speed the shock shaft can travel at. Gas filled ones create a more reliable dampening effect as the gas does not foam the oil up like air and hence the shocks will take longer to fade. Adjustable shocks can have the dampening varied by adjusting the way the oil travels through the dampening holes/shims(depending on how high quality the shocks are). The only way to stop bottoming out is to fit heavier rate springs. If the springs have been cut to go lower then expect bottoming as the spring rate will too light for the reduced wheel travel.

Steve, I just measured my front springs, out of a 6 cyl HQ sedan. In the longest part of the spring, so start to finish of the coil as such, I got 380mm and 384mm. Didn't think there'd be a discrepancy like that, but I suppose they are ~36 years old...

thanks heaps, appreciate the effort : ) Edit* When HQ's are lowered is it 2 inches off the compressed spring (ie. in the car bearing the weight) or 2 inches off the extended spring (out of the car) Also I assume the front and rear are the same length? I would imagine the spring is literally 2 inches shorter. Can check for you next week, getting a set of Lovells 2" lowered V8 springs delivered. pew pew!

it is 2 inches out of the ride height. the spring length vary depending on the weight of the wire it is coiled out of. thats why after market springs are easier to fit than the standard springs. the aftermarket ones are made out of better steel and therefore dont sag as much under the weight of the car so therefore they can be made shorter but still have a standard ride height. Naturally the weight of the vehicle..motors etc can change the suspension quite considerably...Jack
