hi gents, whats the maximum rated tow capacity of a vr/vs ute with v8 and auto.

Whats the practical tow capacity?

will it be happy with a 1500kg mingswood on the tandem?

Phill.It would do that easy im my opinion,you would have no problems.just keep an eye on the road and your cars vital signs.

yeah, id be definitely looking to upgrade the brakes and probably the auto, neither of which are too exciting on that era car.

looking for cars seriously sucks the wang when its everyday bland stuff lol.

in a sedan its 2100kg providing your towbar is rated at that and the trailer /van has brakes.
check your towbar as the smaller ones are only 1200kg, these can vary 1200-1600-2100kg.brakes should not matter that much as the trailer should have its own brakes by law.

i wouldn't.
they aren't a good tow vehicle due to the coil rear.
i got a VS ute and i don't ever tow a car trailer with it as its not upto it.
put 600 kg in the rear and the mudflaps drag

1600kg maximum (auto), 1200kg for the manual (both with braked trailer). I agree with Adam. I had a 2000 VSIII V6 manual. Coil spring back end was not conducive to a good tow car. It was better though than the VY SS manual that replaced it!

You are better off with a VY or VZ 1-tonner, but not a manual. V6 and V8 auto are both rated at 2100kg. Probably still not enough for a 1500kg Holden on a tandem float (most seem to be over 600kg). What you need is a Cross8 - these are 2500kg. I'm trading mine in tomorrow, so Brian Hilton Toyota in Gosford will have a nice pretty inexpensive Cross8 if you want one! The Hilux i'm replacing it with can tow 2250kg.

As I said if your gonna tow alot ,probably not the best option.Especially with the experience the guys above who have had the car.Sounds like its not TONKA TUFF!

the hilux is a great tow vehicle, i had the 3.0TD and it was great

the HQ-WB ute / vans are really good tow vehicles and hard to beat

well aint this a kick in the bum...

I had a vz tonner for a while, with crappy alloytec and it towed fine, though pretty unexciting to drive day to day.

an accidently expanding family meant that had to go, so i replaced it with a vz thunder crewman which tows unreal, drives nice, and makes the right noises (if you really listen hard lol)

now that expanding family is complaining about the rear leg room, and im complaining about the seats getting kicked and the lolly wrappers all over the bloody floor so im about to get rid of it before "they" destroy it.

trouble is, im sick of paying mortgage money for a depreciating car so i dont ever plan on spending "big" dollars on cars (unless a mingswood that keeps me broke counts lol) so i need something in the 10k region that will be happy to tow maybe 8/10 times a year, and i can work out of it (service type guy, so it only needs to fit my tools in it, and carry a ladder)

Im currently getting around in a vs wagon, so my choices are:

-Buy something for the wife and beef up the wag, hoping i dont break it.

-Give the wag to the wife and buy something else for me.

-Do nothing and hang onto my crewman until its worth bugger all, and have the kids wreck it good.

-Give wife the wag, and ill use the crewman for work, and it will get just as wrecked only i wont have anyone else to blame for it.

dont do enough k's to warrant a diesel, id like something that at least drives ok and doesnt struggle keeping up with a cyclist, and fits around my 10k budget, if it will tow reasonably, if not exactly legally i can live with that.

NISSAN PATROL,They tow fantastic(big 6 fuel inj on gas),plenty of space,I got one for the wife's horses and it tows like they aint even there.

Duuno, probably weight related. In the current VE series the ute is only 1600kg max but the sportswagon is 2100kg for the auto.

Maybe ditch the VZ and buy a 6cyl auto Crewman? These are cheap, around $10k. I just traded the Cross8 for $15,000.

just a quick update.

Decided to buy a ba/bf wagon.

Fits all the little monsters and their junk, and with a 2300kg tow rating will be fine for going racing.

anything wrong with these cars that you blokes are aware of?

yeah, but luckily ill hardly drive it, and ill tint the windows and adopt the 18yr old commo drivers submarine position when i do so no one can see me LOL.

Besides, as i tell my mates who like to rib me about brand choices, the pharoah never pulls the horse :)

Good cars when secondhand. As a 6cyl they are probably a better choice than Holden's awful V6. I drove a G6E hire car recently. Had a V6 Calais and Statesman not long before. Ford 6 was a heaps better car to drive. I know this is a little bit newer basically the same stuff.

Not in a Falcon you won't. I'm a huge 5'4" tall and I reckon they all have a drivers seat that is too high or higher still.

Vandals and graffiti "artists" do everyone a favour and target parking meters and fixed speed cameras only.
