try letting it idol on petrol and flick it to gas while idling

what can sometimes happen if you flick it over while driving, is the gas safety switch senses a sudden burst of gas and thinks there's a gas leak so it cuts the gas off

Turn the car off and switch it to gas, then turn on ignition only . . can you hear the gas flow for a second? You should be able to hear it flow and then 2 seconds later time out. Can you hear it flow?

If no - probably got a power to solenoid problem.
If yes - probably got a problem with the vacuum sensing switch.
