On the VR auto matic I have to remove the consol but the gear lever knob is in the way. according to my VN manual the surround should lift over the knob but no matter how I twist and turn it it won't come off. what is the trick?
thanks.

Turn the surround 90 degrees around, and then "roll" it up & over the gear knob towards the radio - it will just have enough clearance to do so.

The black strip that fits around the lever & travels up & down with it is the hardest to remove without breaking. You have to be very careful when twisting it just the right way to open up the gap in the side & remove it from around the lever - I find "one up one down" twist of the plastic either side of the gap to be the best way. It's worth practising this at a wrecking yard if you've never done it before.
Cheers,

Mick

Most common cause of an instrument light short in these is the light in the cigarette lighter. The wiring breaks off & earths out on the gear lever plate, or someone has had it apart before & routed it wrong, causing it to earth out once the insulation is worn through.

The other one I often see is when people wire up aftermarket radios & don't use the illumination wire, but fail to insulate it properly.
Cheers,

Mick

Well got it all apart without breaking anything. the cigarette lighter light was ok, the problem seems to be in the light to the auto trans consol.
the light goes on and off when wriggled, but does not seem to have any breaks, so is probably in the insulation somewhere. at least it is only the globe goes off now, it has stopped blowing the fuse.
I did move the wiring around so maybe that has moved the fault somewhere else.
