Hello Holden heads,

New member, first post. (please be kind :))

I have just been told I can have the vehicle of my late uncle.
I intend on a minor restore, just aesthetically mainly, but also want it to run smoothly.. im not after a show car, just a nice comfortable daily.

The problem is, I don't know anything about cars!

From the registration label I know its a 1978 mode, and I know it's a holden one tonner.. but that's all.
A quick google search makes me think its a HZ, but im not sure what badge?

Can anybody give me details on it? Wheels, guards, lights, grill, engine? are they all factory or not? any help is appreciated

Also, roughly how easy would it be to find replacement parts, and are the relevant parts expensive?

Put up photos of its ID plates. All 1-tonners were the same model (simply called Holden cab-chassis) but there were 2 x special vehicle packages. One is an appearance package that got chrome bits and the other an ambulance package that got a Premier front like that one but not the fluted guards. Ambulance packs are almost always V8 in my experience.
They Alcan tray is a common dealer fitment from the 70's.

As HK has said, post all of the numbers off the plates, chassis & engine & we can decipher it for you.

By the looks of it, that One-Tonner it has had a 'life'. It was common in the day to replace the HQ style front sheet metal with the latter bits, so while it has an HZ grille, it might not actually be an HZ. It could be factory sheet metal (except for the GTS guards), but a close inspection of the plenum panel for bog or any other bodgy work, could tell a story.

The silver wiper arms & early V8 say it's an HJ. But it has an HZ wiper motor & an HX/HZ carbon canister. It's very difficult to tell but it does look like an RTS chassis, so that could be 7/77 onwards. The sealed beam lights are pre-HZ. The wheels are aftermarket.

The Alcan tray was a factory option (A9G) from around 1976 onwards. I do not know the exact date of its introduction, but prior to then the dealers were doing a roaring trade fitting aftermarket ones, including the Alcan item.

Thanks for the response guys.
A bit of research and a look at the ID plates tells me its a 1979 Belmont, from the Adelaide plant.
A little confusing with all the add-ons.
A few more photos from after I picked it up.









A few concerning rust patches that I wasn't sure about. Whipped out the orbital and ripped into it, and managed to remove a majority of it.






Since then I have cleaned it up a little more, and primed the roof and cowl with a spray can of one pack epoxy etch primer.
Ran into a problem though, I've since found out that you can't bog over etch primer. So what is the best option for me? Can I shoot epoxy primer over the etch, and then bog over said epoxy?
Or will I have to rub the etch back off and start from scratch?

Trying to do a majority of it myself to save on the dollars, but I'm limited with what I can do. I only have a single car garage to work in, with not very many tools or supplies.

I have also removed all the hanging guards, such as the doors, guards, hood and nosecone.. I plan on sending them to be sandblasted, that's a cost I'm prepared to pay to save a lot of sanding.

Try cutting the rust out first. There will be rust inside the plenum for sure. It's probably leaking into the cab. Look at the floor pans for rust too.

...at least the cowl has had the proper shaped section welded into it for the later style bonnet...unless that was also done at the factory as an Ambulance package mod ??

No, been welded. There was a new body-in-white created for Ambulance tonners, basically a tonner cab with HJ cowl.

HZ Holden cab chassis. 1927 is Jasmine Yellow. 67V is brown trim.
It was originally a 4.2L V8, 4 speed with an optional diff for that combo: 3.36:1. That diff is very rare on a V8 manual tonner, most likely as it probably had integrated A/C as you could not have a V8 with A/C and 3.55:1 rear axle. I've only ever seen one other. It may simply have been optioned with that diff too.

Its currently an auto, has been a manual before though because the clutch pedal is still in it
