on my hk the hand brake cable passes under the gearbox cross member & rubs against it when the hand brake is used.
should there be a pulley or something in this area for the cable to run through ? it has the pulley near the fire wall

Mate mine has a metal "guard" that goes over the gearbox cross member and the cable rubs on that. |

Jason, the assembly drawings are here: You can see the wear plate bolted to the bottom of the cross member on the drivers side. The cable contacts this plate and rubs on it by design. It seems fairly rough to me, but that's how they are. HT/HG are different as the cross member is bolted to extension rails on the subframe and the handbrake cable runs between the floorpan and the cross member.
