What is the difference between M20 and M21 6 Cylinder Aussie 4 Speed gearboxes, how do you tell the difference between them? What length is the input shaft from the face of the gearbox?

Ok, where do I begin.

The numbers M20 & M21 can refer to any number of Aussie 4-sp gearboxes, as well as Opels, Saginaws & Gemini 'boxes etc. etc.

It's best to dispense with the M20/M21 numbers & look at each gearbox type separately.

With the Aussie 4-sp there are 5 different ratio sets & 2 different lengths, the 4/6 cyl one & the longer V8 version.

The only reliable way to determine which ratio set you have is to pull off the side cover & check the part no. stamped into the cluster gear.

The most common 2 have part nos. ending in either 496 or 497.

The 496 ratio set is the most common with a 1st gear of 3.05, while the 'box with the 497 ratio has a 1st gear of 2.54.

The 497/2.54 box is 'usually' seen only behind 308 V8s but there are several exceptions, which is why I said to check each box on its own merits.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0
