I have two types here in front of me, one is basically flat and folded to suit, looks like original one in photos next to replicas online. The other has a fold at the ends where the screws go through, it folds back on itself and the screws go through two thicknesses of metal. Any ideas? |

Just went and had a look at mine and they both are single layer at edges and have two curved indentations to hold the shape of the middle section. Hope that helps.

Don’t know but this is off an original car, we just can’t remember which one. Can’t add photos here to show it |

They are the same as one of the ones I have here. Other one had a 180deg fold on the edges where the screws go through, it folds back on itself and the screws go through two thicknesses of the metal. |

The heat shields were introduced as a NASCO option in service bulletin H.289 in May 1968 so I guess earlier HK's didnt have them at all. According to the service bulletin the heat shields were for V8 (L30) and 186S (L66) cars. I dont know if every car got one on the production line after April/May ish. The flatter looking shields with only three bends used two washers as spacers under each of the three fuel tank screws. (6 washers for 3 screws) and I guess they were an earlier design? The other shields have six bends and fit neatly into the lip of the fuel tank, no need for spacer washers and I guess they're a later design? My December Dandenong car has this neater type and I'm sure its the original for this car. Wayne

Mine looks like this, one layer of steel but more bends. Maybe you've got plan-B and mine is plan-C, they were probably trying to avoid using spacer washers in production. Edited by user Tuesday, 10 September 2019 10:44:46 PM(UTC)

I think you are right. The one that is flat at the tank will be the early one and the one like yours will be later. Looks like the early one uses 3/4” long screws at the tank side whereas yours will use the original 1/2” long screws I guess. The one I have might be a copy where the fold simply means no need for spacer washers, easier than the later type fold to make? |
