Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and could use some help. My car is a HZ, manual, 253, basically standard but with a very mild cam and extractors. I am playing with distributor advance, and find that at idle the ported vacuum is showing 15" at idle. Shouldn't this be close to zero, and if so why is mine so high. Thanks for your help.

Wrong carby possibly? Is it a proper HZ carby? One of those should have both ported and full vacuum ports. The ported vacuum port is the one used for the canister purge signal, and a manual car has a T off this for vacuum advance.

Thanks for the reply. I believe the carb is from a HJ, it has the port in the middle of the carb at the back. This port is reading 15" basically the same as manifold vacuum. Am I correct that at idle it should be close to zero. Thanks

It must be an auto carby so it isn’t ported vacuum.

I checked the number on the carby, they are 233085 with 55 on a separate line. These number don't line up with my HZ Parts Catalogue, but as I said in the first post I think the engine might be HJ. The numbers do end in 5 so I am guessing it a manual Carby. What are your thoughts. Regards

I'm pretty sure 23-3085 is the HJ and LH pre-canister carby. 23-3086 is the manual version.

The distributor vacuum port on the manual carb is above the PCV port from memory, and on the auto carb it is to the left on it looking from the distributor.

The later HX-HZ style carby has 4 ports on the dizzy side: PCV (big one), ported vacuum above it (same as on earlier manual carby), a little full vacuum port to the left of the PCV port for the air cleaner and a canister purge port above the air cleaner port (also used for ported vacuum to the distributor via the pollution equipment).

Thanks for your help, I will either put up with this carby, or get a manual carby, or get a quadrajet and manifold. Thanks again for your help

I’d recommend:

Blue Quadrajet. 17059596 CXL. Regularly see them at swap meets for $100 or less. $350-$375 for a full rebuild.

KC 4BBL intake. They fit all HT to VL heads. Or an Edelbrock Performer. Here is one on Gumtree. Cost about $750 new.

HEI dizzy off a blue or black 308. Cheaper to buy new nowadays with a HEI coil. Goss sell them cheap. One on EBay.

Pull the ignition switch and solder a wire across the run and start contacts (pink and yellow wires). Fit blue V8 plugs and gap to suit blue V8.

Thanks for the advice, I already have the HEI distributor (blue) fitted, it was playing with it, that raised this carby issue, so that parts done. I have been thinking about the Quadrajet conversion for some time so have a HZ 4 barrel manifold in stock and factory air cleaner. Just need the carby. I will have to check on my plugs and gaps. I have noted the Quadrajet number, may just buy a reconditioned one ready to go. Thanks again I appreciate your help and knowledge. All of this relates to a car ( 4 door GTS) that I purchased, so I don't know the history and anything that might need an update, all good I like explore and learn. Regards

The HZ 4 barrel intake isn’t all that great. It is better than HX though which was awful. HX has barrels down the head sides intended for water but not used. HZ is flat in that area.
The KC intake is a copy of the HDT VC-VK intake but has facility to fit all red heads too. You can buy the carbs ready to go, try Nigel at Xtreme fuel systems. Get a set of bungs too to block off unused ports. The manual vacuum port is on the front of these on the passenger side.
