I had a quick look because the tonner was protesting whenever I went up a hill. Anything other than very slight throttle pressure on an upslope brings on a heap of pinging.

Seems like the vacuum advance isn't working. I sucked on the hose while it was idling and this gave no change in the timing.
Definitely getting vacuum from the carb, up to 15mm Hg when I blip the throttle.

What goes wrong with them. Holed, full of crap, seized? Is there an easy fix? TIA.

They are just a rubber diaphragm. It’s probably shagged.
