Righto, picked up my new Ram 1500 from Gosford last week. Mate, absolutely love it!
It’s the 1500 crew cab. It has the Hemi V8.
It flies for a big ute! (Well not strictly a ute I know). The auto is awesome and it is bloody comfortable to drive.
We have a 2020 WRX STI Subaru car and I haven’t had it side by side yet, but seat of the pants says it would have the WRX off the mark.
Anyway, if you’d sick of 4 cylinder turbo diesels, give a Ram a go.

Mine is being converted on 6th December for delivery early January.
Over the quarter this spec Ram (yours and mine are identical in any way that matters to this) they are all but equal to a standard XY GT-HO or a HT GTS350M, so yes they are quick.

I hadn’t ordered a canopy yet but going to next week. Ateco have canned the Classic Quad cab in Australia and I was thus waiting to make sure mine was actually coming before ordering it as it would be a $6500 paperweight.

Have just about everything else including the OBD Bluetooth dongle and software to talk to the car to change the tyre size, turn on dual zone climate etc.

Been reading up on the best oils and filters for these.

After it is run in some develop a Hemi “tick”. Changing to Redline 5W-30 supposedly shuts 95% of them up, or 5W-20 in the same oil if you must. High Moly oil.

The best filters are supposed to be Royal Purple 10-48 which are well priced over here as Holden LS engines use them.

I remember Walker the Texas Ranger flogging them sort of things around.

I do not know why people bother to put such thin oils in such things 5w-20 is shit, 10w-30 would be the thinnest I would go in QLD, too many problems with too a thin oil.

The problem with most 10W-40 is they quickly become 30W. The modern full Ester based 30W oils are superior to lesser quality synthetic oil (which includes modified base stock) with 40W claims.
Redline 5W-30 high performance full Ester based oil will easily outperform almost all other 40W oils in a Hemi application.

Thanks for that. I hadn’t thought about oil yet. They reckon 12000km to a service but I struggle with that. I will try 10000 but it still seems a fair few K’s. It will get them up fairly quickly, around 3 months for 10000.

Out perform ? on what.
All oil does is provide a barrier between metals and the oil pump provides the coolant by pumping it about.
Then what can the oil tempt handle is the other key factor.

It's only the contaminants the wear out the metal parts.

So we have oils that can handle more heat, but does what you drive ? or how you drive ? that makes that call for you. or you are just tossing your money away.

That's just the basics.

If you can change our own oil that's one thing but if you can't and the new cars is under service 15,00KM or 12 months well then maybe the synthetic oils are the way to go. as some oils will turn to crud with the more km and time frame and many idiots go way over for what ever reason.

Now that cars are going once a year to be serviced I think many just completely forget to service them, but back in the days that your spark plugs let you know something had to be done and that was normally about 12.000km with the average plug.
Nowadays you can do 160.000km on the spark plugs.

I drained mine and changed the filter at 1700kM. Factory fill oil was bad already, smelt really bad. As you can imagine lots of start and stop on a new vehicle, on and off boat and during the conversion process here. The Australian supplement service book says every 7500kM if you do almost anything that is part of normal use, like drive less than 16kM, tow, drive on dirt roads etc.

I didn't want to change to full synthetic until after 10,000kM, so when I went looking for a mineral oil there is absolutely nothing available. Asked the dealer. Idiots told me 0W-20 Castrol synthetic would be what they put in it so I told them they were fools as it doesn't meet Ram Australia specs, not using that. In the end I found one locally available oil which meets the FCA spec MS-6395, and that is Penrite Vantage 5W-30. Only available at Repco. Ryco make a synthetic filter which is Z663ST that I used but I'll use a Royal Purple or Fram Ultra when I change to Redline 5W-30 at 10,000kM.

Changing the filter is awful too, very hard to get it undone and replaced. So I have ordered a remote dual filter kit from Hedman in the USA. It mounts the filter away and in an easy to get to spot, and it takes twin Z9 filters rather than a tiny little LS filter. https://www.hedman.com/product-detail/1227

Just a heads up on a few things.

The day I bought mine it went straight in for a suspension upgrade and rear air bags, plus took the 20" wheels and their 265/60/20 tyres off. I fitted 18x9 rims with the same offset as the 20" with 295/70/18 tyres. The next day it went on the dyno to see what the speedo was like so I could get into the BCM and fix it, but it read spot on with the chassis dyno at 20, 20, 60, 80, 100 and 120. So no need to fix it! The new tyres are 38mm taller than the originals.

I also changed out the stock little RA2 radio and screen for the same 8.4" uConnect Panasonic radio that came standard in the ASV converted Crew Cab and the Laramie, but its Nav maps are Q2 2017 so have to figure out how to update them. I haven't fitted the dual zone bezel yet, just an aftermarket one that allows me to use the manual temperature controls with the 8.4" screen. I fitted the Laramie steering wheel volume and mode selection setup onto mine too as until I fit the CrewCab/Laramie bezel there are no volume controls on the dash. When I get time I'll fit the auto temperature control sensor, humidity sensor and the bezel to give me initially single zone Auto temperature control. The adapter harness I got has the wiring for the extra blend door for dual zone auto climate but I have to wait for a late 4th Gen Aussie Laramie or a Crew Cab to get wrecked somewhere to get its aircon unit from under the dash and swap it over with mine.

I replaced the standard tyres with some Maxis Raza ones. The standard ones were absolute junk. Rocks on my gravel road just punched holes straight through them. Had next to no tyre choice for the 20” wheels, so you will be better off with the different wheels.
I just got the local exhaust bloke to change the standard 44 gallon drum that Ram uses for a muffler. It’s sounds a bit louder now, no idea on power difference. It had plenty anyway.
The windscreen wipers are a bit annoying, they have no ability to just pull the stalk for a single swipe like Toyota has. They lift off the windscreen over 115 too.
No complaints though other than tyres and wipers at this stage.
I fitted a Bullbar too and a set of lights, which are essential with the amount of Roos I hit going to work.
Next up I am going to make a sports bar for the tub. The rear window is a sitting duck to get broken without some sort of protection. Just need to get some 3” tube bent up. The tub will come off eventually to fit a tray.

Mine had maybe 30kM on it when the originals were taken off! I fitted these rims:

http://murchisonproducts...acy-wheel-18x9-18-offset

And these tyres:

https://www.tyroola.com....QlwLQjeQt24aAr3aEALw_wcB

I did look at the same 295/70/18 tyre in that Maxxix you bought but these Yokos were on special and they had a buy 3 get 4 deal on, so they were less than $290 a tyre.

The reason I went for 18" is I wanted a sidewall. Already I have bounded off lots of kerbs maneuvering through shopping centre carparks and drive thru coffee and the bigger sidewall protects the rims.

The Toyos on that wheel image above at Murchison are what I really wanted but they aren't available in Australia in a 295/70/18. The ones in that picture are 35x12.5R18 which aren't legal as they are more than 50mm taller than the originals. Once Toyo release the AT3 in Australia I'll be able to get the 295/70/18 tyres. The 35" tyres are 890mm, the 295/70/18 are 870mm and are already 38mm taller than the original 265/60/20.

Here is how it looked, before and when I picked it up after the suspension and wheels/tyres were done.

Just create an album and upload photos to it. Then attached with a reply (not quick reply). There is an icon there for attaching album photo to a post. If they are too big you can resize them using standard windows photo viewer.

No can’t get anything to happen with the album thing. Just says uploading from iCloud and nothing else happens. Other times it used to say the file was wrong.
