I disagree. They float a bit over 180 but they aren’t that bad. My WRX STI was definitely better though.

Far cry from something more modern like a V2 or VE etc.

HQ-HX I put Bendix metal king brake pads on mine and bingo that was a transfomation ! astounding braking power at speed ! and do not fade !
Quality Shocks and good tyres for hooking in is number one and then you can play with the Camber with more neg so as to sort out the crap understeer.

I found the VN-S Commodors floated about over 180 as well, not badly but enough to be carful of such. Not like a HR Holden at 110mph that was a real floater for sure.

Nut when the VT SS came out they did not float at all, only problem with them was the stupid rubbish IRS had no toe link until VX ser2 SS then you had a real car for once ! right off the show room floor briliant ! just add Bendix Ultimate and you have magic brakes !

The IRS from the VP to the VX was evil over 8 10ths as it you do not catch it before it wants to toss you off the road, you have to be real carful of that !

I had to laugh the first time i drove a VP with IRS i said to a mate what a total bucket of sh1t it was ! and he was like No ! IRS is King for handling ! What a load of total BS i said what about the Datsun 200B Haha ! I had a 240k Haha !

Where were the roads good enough in Australia to drive a hZ holden at 180k's? I drove a hz for 8 years I lived in the Territory when there was open speed limit . Keep the bullshit coming I've lost my licenece for speeding plenty of times.
How long did you stay at 180k? 30 seconds ? Where can you drive a HZ at 180 what was the accuracy of the speedo past 150?
Why doi Holden men allways bullshit?

The Hay plains in the 70s was good for 180+ km/h for more than 30 seconds. Done that a few times. As long as your front suspension has plenty of castor, stability is fine at speed.

When a HZ speedo read 180km how fast were you really going? The few I played with were 30 k's out by the time they read 180, one read 180 but the reality was it was doing about 150. The car had the orginal ratio diff the speedo was pretty close until about 120 k's.

Actually I did it in an HD (turbo 5-speed etc. etc.). I had a recalibrated speedo which was within 2% on the dyno.

I drove that Hay plain in both directions a few years back, 2019 I think when all the bushfires were around Canberra and southern NSW. In my Supercharged Hilux towing a box trailer (picking up the Rodtech front end and 9" for the GTS). I found if I didn't sit on certain speeds I was getting overtaken by trucks! That Hilux was far more road stable at higher speeds than any HQ to WB I ever had, but it also had a lot more power than most HQ to HZ.

One of the famous dashboard errors in motoring journalism is the HO down the Hume article by Mel Nichols, but tacho rather than speedo. That famous photo (touched up for the magazine to show 104mph but later published properly) shows the car pulling 141.5mph but with tacho reading incorrectly at 6700rpm - the article and later Mel himself said it was 6150rpm as it kept hitting the rev limiter and killing the engine's power.

The guy that built the speedo with a new face (220 km/h), bench tested it & said it was was good within 3.5% at full scale.

The dyno only when to around 135 km/h. So 2% at that speed verifies that.

actually they weren't ! .... at the HZ intro day at LangLang, quite a number of us invited GMH employees took advantage
of the 'come drive with me' invite from the guy who lead the RTS intro- Peter Hanenberger

A HZ GTS with Hanenberger at the wheel will happily run along the top lane of the speed bowl pretty much flat chat
at an indicated 200-210 (speedo) .... hands off!

That's good for a road car... and I compare that with the next time I got a ride around the speed bowl, fast!
In a VH Commodore race car with #05 on the door piloted (right word to use) by one PBrock, it did not like
being held there . Tacho said a tad over 6800 in top gear, Harves afterwards said thats about 280 with the gearing
at the time on #05
Quite fast enough thank you. The exhaust noise is the other thing I remember, no ear plugs in under the helmet ...
6800 from a Holden V8 is a glorious symphony but I was deaf with the next hour or so...

Try all the way from Bundaberg to Brisbane and back hundreds of times dude just taking it easy and at night many a time, she had spotlights dude. that's not even getting into it.
She had 3.08 diff 235/60 x14 tyres and sat on 4500rpm at 180KM/H Back in the 1980's you are not sitting on 180 all the way but just float up to that crusing speed easy as, not pussing it at all.
Oh i always had a radar detector. still got busted tho at times.

I had a XG Longreach ute and a mate drove it on the double lanes all the way to Brisbane at 210KM/H and it was cutting out at 210 found out that it was speed limited, the Ford dealership did not even know they were. then when the ED Falcon came out they were speed limited to 180KM/H
a mate bought a 1994 Longreach and he was spewing that it was limited to 180 because every morning to get to work he drove at 210KM/H In his XC 5.8L. We had a run with my XG and his XC and he went out directly and bought a New XG, because he was so impressed !

I road on the double lanes out and to Brisbane at 240KM/H taking it easy dude not pushing it at all, just playing it safe ! if a car pulled out into the right lane you just back off touch the brakes, you have washed off the speed easy as and then just back to 4th 5th then 6th in no time. Look the 1/4 in 9 sec dude and a quiet bike stock as a rock.
No one can do what i did unless you get your eye in ? and know your car or bike real well. I would never drive something that i did not own like that, you have to work out your tyre pressures etc you have to know what you are doing. the average dude would be dead in no time because they do not have a clue, if you think you are pushing yourself then you are going too fast dude !

I rode Enduro bikes as well and dude that's a way to challange yourself hooking in full on !

But i am in my 60's now and retired, i have no need to hook in and i would not do such because i am not that fit etc to bother with such.

Yes i know Hannenberger showed off such things with the HZ RTS, THIS IS WHAT THEY MUST DO, HE SAID ! Flick the s wheel at whatever speed and catch it easy as !

Them HZ 5.OL 4sp were good to drive as hard as you liked the 6 cyl were just too gutless to totaly control, because you can use the gas peddle on a V8 to steer it hanging the tail out ! and you need at least the 4.2L in a VB to do that. For they were the best handling car off the showroom floor, the VC-H-K-L-N-P-R-S on was a dog ! UNDERSTEERING Crap and moronic oversteer ! but bad drivers love that crap. and such bagged Hanenberger in fact for making a car truly handel !

The idiots even have a Fix for the HZ that wheelaligners do, so as to turn the HZ into a bucket of sh1t like the HQ was. They think they are so bright ? Morons !

I have been in the car with Brock as well at Norwell, i was invited to test drive all of the new VU Commodores and at the Opening day of the new VE Utes.
Brock was taught to not abuse a car, and the science regarding what he was truly doing and work it all out, that's why he was the King of the Mountain. he did not just turn up and race for the hell of it !
